The windows were left open last night, which meant we awoke this morning to the sound of the early back-to-school alarm and a chill awaiting us outside the covers. How fitting that the first day of school here in Wyoming happens to be one of the coldest mornings of the summer. Fall reminds us it’s quickly approaching.
The dress laid out on the floor by five-year-old hands is a hopeful lingering of summer, and the perfectly chosen outfit for the first day of kindergarten.
There is something about the first day of school that makes time feel especially tangible.
One minute, they are small enough to be carried everywhere. Then, suddenly, they are standing in the kitchen in their new shoes, backpack on their shoulders, ready to walk out the door and into something entirely their own.
Today, we’re moseying alongside Cece.
A Mosey kiddo and Jackson local, Cece is starting Kindergarten today. Her first day is the kind of milestone that feels big enough to deserve a little pause, and some attention to detail.
The slightly-too-big backpack.
The outfit chosen entirely by her.
The nervous excitement.
The one-track mind about art class.
The grown-up confidence that seems to arrive overnight.
And, of course, the morning ritual of taking approximately one hundred photos before finally getting out the door.
There is a particular sweetness to a Wyoming back-to-school morning. The air has started to change, even if summer isn’t quite ready to let go. The mountains are still green, the days are still long, and there are still plenty of warm afternoons ahead. But that crispness in the morning air is a little reminder: we’re turning a corner.
Back-to-school has a way of doing that.
It marks the end of one kind of freedom and the beginning of another. Summer days that seemed endless give way to classroom routines, after-school adventures, new friends, and all the little rituals that will soon become familiar.
For parents, it can feel bittersweet.
We spend so much of childhood watching for the next thing, and getting excited about every milestone. And then Kindergarten arrives, and suddenly the next thing feels like a little too much of a big thing.
Because underneath all the excitement is the quiet realization that they are becoming more themselves.
More independent.
More curious.
More confident.
More theirs.
Maybe that’s what we love most about these milestone moments at Mosey. They’re not really about the big event itself. They’re about all the tiny details surrounding it.
The dress on the floor.
The sleepy morning.
The cool air coming through an open window.
A little hand reaching for yours on the walk to school.
And the moment, however brief, when you realize that the little person beside you is ready to take the next step.
So today, we’re celebrating Cece, and every Mosey kiddo heading back to school.
Here’s to new classrooms, new friends, scraped knees, packed lunches, big questions, little victories, and the kind of days that somehow make five years feel like both forever and no time at all.
Happy first day of Kindergarten, Cece. We can’t wait to see where you Mosey next.
